Beyond University: Exploring Apprenticeships, Trades & Non-Traditional Careers

The New Definition of Success

For years, the “default” after high school has been heading straight to university. But times are changing and fast. Across Canada, employers are increasingly seeking skilled professionals in trades, technology and hands-on careers that don’t always require a four-year degree.

The Rise of Apprenticeships and Skilled Trades

Apprenticeships offer the best of both worlds: you earn while you learn. For example, in 2023 Canada (excluding Alberta) saw 70,521 new apprenticeship registrations  an 8 % increase from 2022, and surpassing pre-pandemic levels. (Statistics Canada)

The national labour-market forecast predicts over 122,000 new journeypersons will be required between 2022 and 2026 in Canada’s top trades alone. (Canada)
In one province, Ontario, apprenticeship registrations climbed by 24 % in a single year. (Mechatronics Canada)
These numbers signal a strong demand for trades careers.

Non-Traditional Careers Are Growing Too

Beyond “classic” trades like carpentry or plumbing, new non-traditional career paths are emerging  digital design, renewable energy, AI-support roles, and more. Many of these value short-term diplomas, certifications or micro-credentials over a full university degree.

A recent survey found 40 % of Canadians say they’ve considered a career in the skilled trades, yet only about 13 % are currently working in them  hinting at an untapped opportunity. (talentcanada.ca)

Choosing What’s Right for You

Think about your strengths and interests. Do you enjoy problem-solving, working with your hands, creating something tangible? A trade or technical diploma might fit. Prefer flexibility, independence or creativity? Explore non-traditional paths  like freelancing, digital media or entrepreneurship.
Rentention and completion rates remain important: for example, while registrations are climbing, certifications still lag in some trades. (CLAC)

The Takeaway

Success no longer follows a single road. Apprenticeships and non-traditional careers offer practical skills, real-world experience and in-demand opportunities often without the time or debt of a full university degree. Before committing to university, explore your options: you might discover your future where you least expect it.
